India vs the newbie Afghanistan Match Meme Fest On Twitter
India emerged unbeaten but definitely not unhurt, after Afghanistan fell short of just 11 runs from the unimpressive 224 for eight posted by the blue-heads.
Having clinched an 11-run win, India is sitting pretty at the 3rd spot of the 10-team table with 9 points from 5 matches.
Afghanistan gave India a massive scare on Saturday and they were going steady in their chase, making sure they didn’t lose wickets in clusters.
India captain had led the team from the front with the bat, scoring a fluent 63-ball 67 on a sluggish pitch wherein most batsmen struggled. India finished with only 224 but Kohli marshaled his troops wonderfully well to clinch an 11-run win over the spirited Afghanistan team.
Virat Kohli wasn’t quite satisfied with the replays where Shami bowled a full-length straight delivery to Zazai and hit him on his pads before going up in appeal. However, umpire Aleem Dar wasn’t interested and so Kohli went straight up to the umpire and pleaded to him with folded hands, that gesture sparked a meme fest in the social media!
Meanwhile Afghan skipper Gulbadin Naib praises ‘game-changer’ Jasprit Bumrah for his impressive spell. Bumrah took two wickets in three balls in the 29th over as Afghanistan slipped from 106-2 to 106-4 and that had a big impact in the game, despite Mohammed Nabi’s fighting half-century.
The India pacer also bowled a splendid 49th over, conceding only five runs.
“Those two wickets by Bumrah changed the game completely. Those were good deliveries. We didn’t gift our wickets. It was Bumrah, who got them,” a disappointed Rahmat said after the game.
He also added that Rashid and Najibullah should have hung around supporting Nabi, who scored 52 and was first of Shami’s three hat-trick victims.
The pair Bumrah & Shammi bowled icy death overs, consistently landing delivery after delivery in the blockhole and not letting Afghanistan batsman free their arms.
The suspense was truly maddening. Something unexpected crouched out of nowhere up till the very end. As expected, Indian fans were a tangled bunch of nerves and excitement.
MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav stitched a 57-run stand for the fifth-wicket but played out 84 balls when India required an aggressive approach from the two batsmen in a World Cup 2019 match against Afghanistan on Saturday. India’s World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni managed 28 runs off 52 balls with the help of three boundaries, while Kedar Jadhav scored 52 runs off 68 balls, including three boundaries and a six. India was restricted to 224 for eight in 50 overs on a tricky surface at The Rose Bowl in Southampton.
The duo’s approach, both while batting together and individually, was criticized by fans and experts on social media while many fans came up hilarious memes on Twitter.
After all, if Afghanistan had beaten India it would have been one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history because India is among the Favorites!
Virat Kohli’s men will next face the West Indies on June 27.
